The petition alleges that Elon Musk has “engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada.”
A movement to revoke Musk’s Canadian citizenship has gained over 250,000 signatures amid his ongoing involvement with the Trump administration.
Within the 47th president’s government, Musk leads the Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is responsible for reducing federal costs, modernizing technology, eliminating fraud, and curbing wasteful spending while boosting overall government productivity.
It appears that Musk’s ties to Trump have fueled the petition, particularly as the president prepares to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian imports next month.
Speaking shortly before the tariff increase was announced, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated: “We’re ready with a response, a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response.”
In response, Canada is implementing 25 percent tariffs on CA $155 billion worth of U.S. goods.
Trudeau stated: “It will have real consequences for you, the American people. The actions taken by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together.”
Meanwhile, a petition demanding the revocation of Musk’s Canadian citizenship has gained significant momentum due to his close ties with President Trump.
“Elon Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” the petition asserts. “He has used his wealth and power to influence our elections.”
The petition continues: “He has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty, and Elon Musk’s efforts to undermine it must be addressed.”
“We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, urge the Prime Minister to revoke Elon Musk’s dual citizenship and immediately invalidate his Canadian passport.”
In a now-deleted Twitter post, the Tesla CEO reportedly claimed that Canada is “not a real country,” despite acquiring a Canadian passport through his mother, who was born there.
Musk, originally from South Africa, also holds U.S. citizenship.
Qualia Reed, the petition’s creator, wrote on Bluesky: “To be clear, this action I started, and all of you are spreading and growing, isn’t about personal attacks.”
“It’s about ensuring that those who influence global policies and industries understand that the public will not tolerate their lack of ethical responsibility.”
However, even if the Canadian government wished to revoke Musk’s citizenship, it would face significant legal hurdles.
Audrey Macklin, a law professor at the University of Toronto, told CNN: “Canada does not revoke citizenship that is lawfully obtained. This means there is actually no legal mechanism to strip Elon Musk of his Canadian citizenship unless it was acquired through fraud or misrepresentation.”
